I saw this done here http://red-dirt-mother.blogspot.com/2008/04/crayon-color.html - there's instructions there too. All I would add is that they melt very quickly in the oven. I thought we'd spoiled ours as within about five minutes there was a strange smell and when I opened the door billows of smoke came out :0) They turned out fine in the end though.
We did them in an old silicon muffin tin. I suspect any would be fine just so long as they weren't going to be so big they would break in half when used.

I know this involves melting and cold setting , but exactly what did you do?

I've made these a lot over the years and mine have never looked that good! I either melt them too long or end up with chunks!
